For Jane Horton and Janie Schumacher, faculty from the University Preparation Department, the images of the destruction in Haiti have been overwhelming. They believe the scope of the tragedy will be felt for years to come. They asked themselves, “What can we do to help?”
Their idea, TRU AID FOR HAITI a three-week fund raising event starts today. “Our goal is to raise $10,000 by February 12th,” says Schumacher. “We have raised over $1,000 already but we need the help of staff, faculty and students to reach our goal.”
All donations are being sent to World Vision of Canada, a registered charity with the Canadian government matching dollar for dollar. Part of the two campaign includes two Days to Donate, scheduled for Thursday, January 28th and Monday February 1st.
The Challenge: Ask faculty to challenge their students to consider donating to TRU Aid for Haiti. “We are asking for one dollar or more and are encouraging faculty to invite their students to visit us on facebook,” Horton said. “Search for TRU Aid to Haiti and watch for our YouTube presentation in the very near future.”
Faculty will be receiving information in their mailboxes. The plan is for ask a student to volunteer to pass along a collection envelope on either of the dates.
All donations over $15 are tax deductible. Should a student request a tax receipt, their name, address and amount donated must be included. A sheet of paper will be in each envelope for this purpose. World Vision will mail tax receipts to the individual. Cheques must be made payable to World Vision Canada. Watch for further information in Omega, The Daily News, Student Street and during International Days February 1-5th.
