An international expert in resort management, marketing, recreational and adventure studies will head TRU’s School of Tourism
DrHarold Richins, who most recently held the position of Graduate Chair in the School of Travel Industry Management at the University of Hawaii, started as Dean of the School of Tourism on June 1.
“Dr. Richins brings a vast wealth of experience and knowledge to our School of Tourism and senior management team,” said Dr. Ulrich Scheck, TRU Acting Provost and Vice-President Academic”. We are not only excited about what he will contribute to TRU academically, but also about the expertise he will offer to our Province’s tourism industry.”
The new Dean’s previous academic and administrative appointments include the Sierra Nevada College at Incline, Nevada; Waikato University, New Zealand; University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia; University of Newcastle, Australia; Southern Cross University, Australia, and MtHood Community College, Oregon
“Thompson Rivers University’s School of Tourism has an excellent reputation in Culinary Arts, Adventure Studies and Tourism Management, and I am pleased to be able work with such accomplished faculty and students in a region that offers so many opportunities to engage with the local community and apply our research and knowledge in this important economic and environmental sector, ” said Dr. Richins. “I look forward to working with TRU’s growing network of partners, both locally and globally”.
Besides his strong background in industry and community service, Richins spent five years developing, managing and marketing his own business in yachting holidays, in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Pacific regions. He also brings seven years of management experience with corporations such as Tektronix and Nike.In addition to his service as a consultant in ski and mountain resort management, his many other community contributions have included appointments on boards, committees and community groups involved in tourism marketing and management, leisure product development, sustainable tourism, sustainable community development, environmental protection and education
Dr. Richins replaces Dr. Dave Twynam who in his role as Dean has been a strong advocate for faculty, staff and students in the School of Tourism for over a decade.
