Habitat for Humanity Kamloops have partnered with Thompson Rivers University School of Trades and Technology and School District #73 to build a home at 204 Park Street

A groundbreaking ceremony today launched HFHK‘s third residential duplex in the McDonald Park neighborhood of Kamloops’ North Shore.

Under the leadership of TRU’s Residential Construction program, TRU and high school students enrolled in the SD 73 Construction Trades Program will take the project from footings to lock up over the next several months.

“Being able to partner with Habitat for Humanity is a great project for our students,” said Peter Poeschek, TRU Chair Residential Construction Trades“These students will experience the reality of building two homes, not lab mock-ups in the shopThey will learn their skills first hand, and they will learn how important organizations like Habitat for Humanity are to building communities.”

“This is truly a tremendous opportunity for our affiliate,” said Carolyn Hepburn, Chair of HFH Kamloops”Our National organization is also following this project as it is an unique approach to building Habitat Homes. I have every confidence this will be a huge success!”

HFH Kamloops built its first duplex in Brockelhurst in 2000 and the second in Westsyde was completed in 2006.

Once TRU Residential Construction students have taken the building to lock up, there is still a need for contributions from community organizations in the construction industry for volunteers, before the selected families can move in.

HFH Kamloops builds affordable homes for working families in this community, who would not otherwise afford a home. It’s a hand up, not a handout and the selected families must also contribute to the construction of their home.
