Students and faculty in the Mechanical Trade department of the TRU School of Trades and Technology are “putting their heads” together to support a young student in the Heavy Duty Mechanics program recently diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
Monday, Jan. 26, marks the halfway point of 19-year-old Bradley Tamas’s chemotherapy treatments. To celebrate and show their support for Bradley, instructors, fellow students, family and friends will shave their heads. They are accepting pledges to raise money to support the Royal Inland Hospital Cancer Clinic.
Bradley’s diagnosis has struck particularly close to home in the trades division, as he is the son of Murray Tamas, a mechanic trades instructor at the university. A fast growing tumour was discovered on Bradley’s neck just after he finished his Level 2 Heavy Duty apprenticeship last year, and he is presently undergoing chemotherapy treatments at RIH
“We just wanted to do something for Bradley to give him a boost to keep his spirits up, ” said Tim Stainton, the TRU mechanical trades instructor spearheading the fundraiser. “We all know Bradley pretty well and want to see him get better so he can get back for his Level 3 training later this spring”
Randy Hendricks from Valleyview Barbers has offered his skills to shear the 18 supporters, starting at 11:00 am Monday, Jan26 at the Trades and Technology Centre, Room TT212. All proceeds will go towards the newly renovated Royal Inland Hospital Cancer Clinic and tax receipts will be available for donations over $10.00
In addition the department is arranging a silent auction which has already received prizes that range from t-shirts to a five-piece cordless tool kit, and more items are coming in from the community every day. The auction will run until the end of February
