KAMLOOPS – A committee comprised of representatives from the UCC Sports
Council, Cariboo Student Society, UCC Athletics, community and media
have decided on the team name that will carry Thompson Rivers
University varsity athletes into their first year of university play
in the Canada West Conference of Canadian Interuniversity Sports.
TRU athletes will now carry the name and insignia of the TRU WolfPack.
“It is a strong, one-word name that will work well cross-gender, and
follows the acronym TRU very well,” said UCC/TRU Athletics Director
Ken Olynyk. “It’s not a common name among universities and colleges,
and it should stand the test of time,” he added.
“We liked the name especially since wolf packs are known as cohesive
hunting units. They support one another and they’re united in their
purpose. They’re feared and respected: basically everything you want
for a university athletics team,” he said.
The new team logo, not finalized yet, is expected to be ready in
early April. Team uniforms will be ready for the beginning of the
Fall/05 season.
The mascot will be named in the near future, and Olynyk hopes to see
the new mascot costume ready by this summer.
