KAMLOOPS-A student at UCC’s Williams Lake campus has won the Lieutenant-Governor’s Silver Medal this year.

Awarded to the top-ranking UCC student in a vocational or career program who has actively participated in college and/or community affairs and who has a GPA in excess of 3.5, the medal was presented to Heidi Wikene, a student in the Human Services Program, at the UCC Williams Lake Awards Ceremony held December 7th. Wikene, who has a 4.22 GPA in her current program, is an active community volunteer with several community organizations. She is President of the Cariboo-Chilcotin Gymnastics Association, is an active fundraiser for the local Tae Kwan Do club, and is a member of the regional Child Poverty Action Committee.

A single mother of three boys, Josh, 15, Morgan, 11, and Bea, 10, Wikene has been working toward a degree which will enable her, in her words, “to help people,” on a part-time basis for the past eight years, with the ultimate goal of obtaining a degree in Social Work.
