KAMLOOPS-Kids who’ve been at UCC Open House before immediately think of the Wonders of Chemistry Show (held in the Clocktower this year) as a main attraction, but there’s lots more than that for kids at this year’s Open House, to be held Saturday, October 16th from 11 am to 4 pm all over the UCC campus.
Up in the Trades and Technology Building, children can assemble and race their own rubber-band cars, check out the Popsicle bridge tester (and get ideas to make one of their own for the annual contest), fool around with motor controls, explore magnetism, or have a hair-raising experience with the Vander Graff generator.
In the Art & Education Building, the School of Education is featuring opportunities for children to participate in painting, drama, woodworking, music, stories and puzzles.
The Sciences & Health Sciences Building, home of the now-famous and eagerly anticipated Wonders of Chemistry Show, features many other wondrous worlds as well. Children can launch a rocket, touch a sea star, grind their own flour, meet a friendly stick insect, see fossils, crystals, and wildlife, find out about germs, worms and microbes, explore astronomy, and have hands-on fun with math puzzles, a fish pond, and wild and wacky Eureka! experiments.
Next door in the Gymnasium, UCC Varsity Athletics & Recreation has a whole range of interactive games and contests for kids, while over in the Old Main Building, youngsters can have their faces printed on mock magazine covers in the Journalism Department, experience making a 911 call, adventure in the realm of computers, and reveal their inner selves with fun Psychology quizzes.
Kids gotta eat, too. They can try out a variety of hors d’oeuvres and finger foods in the Culinary Arts Centre, free coffee and donuts at the Career Cafe, or go for more regular lunch or snacks at the Tim Horton’s cafe in Old Main.
There’ll be lots of performances throughout the day across campus for kids of all ages as well. Uncle Chris the Clown and the Town Crier always bring a smile, fire dancers will amaze, and sound will abound, with music by Roxanne Hall, Vinyl Cause, the UCC Chorus, and the SKSS band.
Free fun for the whole family awaits at UCC’s Open House.
