Dr. Hansen is a geneticist and developmental biologist in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary. Over the past four years, he has also functioned as the Assistant Dean (Supervisory Development) in the Faculty of Graduate Studies. In this role he has helped to raise the awareness and quality of graduate supervision at the University of Calgary by providing supervisors with the training and resources they need to be successful. As part of this effort, all new graduate supervisors participate in an onboarding workshop with Dr. Hansen. He has also increased the level of appreciation shown to supervisors by initiatiating the #GreatSupervisor Award and Supervisor Appreciation Week. Dr. Hansen has presented the UCalgary strategy on improving graduate supervision to many institutions in North America, and UCalgary received the WAGS/ETS Award for Excellence and Innovation in Graduate Education for its work on excellence in graduate supervision.
