Celebrating Research at TRU

March 25, 2019

TRU is once again celebrating Research Week!

Now in its fourth year, Research Week, which runs March 25 – 30, offers a blend of workshops, poster and oral presentations, research communication competitions, and community-building opportunities. As always, the week is capped off by the annual Undergraduate Research and Innovation Conference.

The events are inclusive and open to students, staff, faculty, and the community at large, and two of the events — the Three Minute Thesis for graduate students, and the 180-second Research Challenge for faculty — will be Livestreamed.

Research Week was inspired by the Undergraduate Research and Innovation Conference, now in its 14th year, and is designed to showcase student and faculty research to broad audiences. Each year, the number of events and activities grows, as does the number of people who take part in these activities.

“This speaks to the remarkable growth in research activities at TRU,” said Dr. Will Garrett-Petts, Associate Vice President, Research and Graduate Studies. “This year, we’re especially pleased to see such active involvement by the community, including Interior Health, the Kamloops Food Policy Council, and other community organizations.”

Highlights include the hugely popular Three Minute Thesis (3MT), an internationally recognized research communication competition that challenges thesis-based graduate students to deliver a compelling presentation of their research in three minutes or less to a non-specialist audience.

Judges for the 2019 3MT include Shelley Joyce, host of Daybreak on CBC Kamloops, Alison Sidow, Superintendent of School District 73, and Mel Rothenburger, Editor of Armchairmayor.ca and TNRD Area P Director. The student who wins the competition walks away with a $1,000 prize, and moves onto the Western Canadian 3MT, scheduled for April 19 at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George.

This event is followed by the faculty 180-Second Research Challenge, which will be judged by a panel of graduate students, and finally by In a Nutshell Undergraduate Research Challenge, will be judged by TRU’s Graduate Research Mentors. All are encouraged to show up to support these brave students and faculty, and to vote for People’s Choice!

Other highlights include the IT Showcase for Researchers, which will feature up to a dozen partners who are on hand to provide demos, and the Interior Health Research Day, which features presentations that focus on healthcare research in the BC Interior.
