To mark International Day for the Elimination of Poverty, the TRU Students’ Union Equity Committee is hosting this discussion on the growing crisis in the real estate and rental markets in Kamloops and what we can do about it.
Everyone is welcome.
A variety of policy choices and market factors have resulted in a shrinking amount of affordable housing, and with a rental vacancy rate of 1.1 percent and the average home costing $408,000, many people can’t find affordable shelter.
This is a growing problem across the country, with Statistics Canada reporting that one in four Canadian households (3.3 million) do not have affordable housing.
The discussion will break down how we got to where we are, the negative impacts unaffordable housing have on our community, and solutions we can implement to make housing in Kamloops more affordable for all.
