Members of the School of Education (Faculty of Education and Social Work) took part in the Teacher Education Round Table Conference at the University of British Columbia on May 11 and 12, 2017.  TRU was represented by Associate Professor Carol Rees, Chair of the School of Education (also representing Dean Airini at the meetings); Susan Lidster, Bachelor of Education Practicum Coordinator; Lolina Koopmans, Education Advisor; and Beverly Ruberg, Sessional Lecturer (representing the B.Ed. Program Coordinator, John Churchley).  While the focus of the Round Table this year was on practicum, much discussion centred on the great need for teachers in the province; participants were informed that, while there is a shortage of Teachers on Call across the province, the situation is especially severe in the Surrey School District and Vancouver School District.  Further information about teacher shortages and teacher hiring in BC can be found here and here. At TRU’s June 2017 convocation, approximately thirty new elementary teachers will walk across the stage to receive their B.Ed. degrees, and in September 2017, our School of Education will open its doors to sixty new teacher candidates.
