UEPrep faculty members explore innovative Math teaching

October 3, 2016

UEPrep faculty members Christina Cederlof and Jane Horton hone their Math-teaching skills.

Faculty members in the University and Employment Preparation Department (Faculty of Education and Social Work) had an opportunity to expand their range of teaching tools by exploring innovative practices for secondary Math teachers on Sept. 21. In a professional development session initiated by UEPrep Lecturer and Department Chair Jane Horton and School of Education Principal Lecturer John Churchley, and facilitated by School District No. 73 Numeracy Coordinator Amanda Russett, faculty members learned about the pedagogical research of Dr. Peter Liljedahl (Simon Fraser University). Attendees had an opportunity to work in “visibly random groups” on “non-permanent vertical surfaces” to engage in collaborative problem solving, strategies which Liljedahl’s research has shown to increase student engagement.
