Flying to help others

August 19, 2016

Arman Gill is a 2016 Ambassador's Entrance Scholarship recipient and begins his Bachelor of Science in Nursing studies this fall.

Combining a love of flying and human service is how Arman Gill intends to carve out his space in the world.

“My service activities have developed me into a leader who is defined by ambitions and empathy,” said Gill. “I feel great fulfillment in my own life as I continue to have a positive influence in the lives of those around me.”

The graduate of Abbotsford Traditional Secondary is a 2016 TRU Ambassador’s Entrance Scholarship recipient and begins his Bachelor of Science in Nursing studies this September. Valued at $22,000, the award recognizes documented exemplary leadership, community service and strong academic performance.

Not one to be idling for too long, Gill has spent the past few years immersed in cadets, school and in municipal action through Abbotsford Youth Council (AYC).

In 2010 he joined 861 Silverfox Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron and it proved to be a good decision. As the skies of opportunity opened, he was selected a few times to attend prestigious training, served in leadership positions and for his commitment to cadets and community, received the Legion Medal of Excellence from the Royal Canadian Legion. Last summer he earned his glider pilot’s license and this summer his private pilot’s license.

His position with AYC allowed him to bring the youth voice forward as he relayed their comments, suggestions and complaints to municipal decision makers.

The opportunity to inform and persuade municipal decision makers through making presentations or having a seat at the table, Gill brought the youth voice forward as he relayed their comments, suggestions and complaints. Practicing leadership and project management, he helped orchestrate and carry out events at Abbotsford recreation centres that were engaging and relevant. For one term he served as the youth representative for Abbotsford’s Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission.

School was another place to serve and influence. When not involved in the music program, team sports, musical theatre or studying, Gill helped raise community and global consciousness through the school’s Kiwanis Key Club.

“My career goals are in the field of health sciences and the Canadian Armed Forces and this scholarship will allow me to pursue higher education so that in the future, I may use my professional skills to serve my community and country on a greater scale,” said Gill.
