Canadian birthday book sale supports student award

June 30, 2016

Donate a book, buy a book and support students at the Council of Canadians book sale on July 2.

What do gently-used books have in common with a TRU student award and the Kamloops chapter of the Council of Canadians?

Roll them into one and you have the Kamloops chapter’s annual Canada Day book sale where money is raised for a student award for someone with strong Canadian content in their arts courses.

The sale is July 2 from 8 a.m. to noon on the lawn outside Stuart Wood Elementary next to the Kamloops Farmers’ Market. Almost every genre will be represented with the exception of encyclopedias and text books. Prices are $2 for paperbacks, $3 for hardcovers and bulk prices will posted at the event.

Books contributions can be made at the sale or in advance at the Smorgasbord Deli (715 Victoria St.).

While at the sale, test your knowledge of Canadian facts and figures by playing the trivia game. Also try a round of the board game crokinole, which historians believe may have developed in rural Canada in the 1860s and is a blend of older games from England, France, Germany and India.

Unsold books will will be given a second chance at a new home when they are donated to the sale supporting TRU’s English as a Second Language Award.

Aside from the sale, the Kamloops Chapter of the Council of Canadians organizes meet-ups to discuss issues the likes of democracy, peace and the environment, and coordinates and supports events to keep residents informed and active on local matters and those of a global nature.
