Tourism class launch campaign for bike camp

April 6, 2016

After hearing a presentation on a not-for-profit bike camp for marginalized youth, a class of tourism students decided to spearhead a crowdfunding campaign in support of the initiative.

The Ashes to Dust Mountain Bike Camp is a partnership between the Pheonix Centre  and the Kamloops Bike Riders Association (KBRA) providing Kamloops youth facing barriers with three days of guidance and instruction on mountain biking skills and trail stewardship.

Tourism alumnus, KRBA member and lead coach of the camp, Ted Morton, was invited to present the project to a class of students in Event Planning 2170: Fundraising in Nonprofits and the students were so intrigued they decided to take action.

“We are very honoured that the students chose the bike camp as a project to support,” said fundraising and event coordinator Marcia Dick (BBA,’08). “It is heartwarming to see the mountain bike community get behind our initiative. You know you are doing something right when blessings like this happen.”

The goal of the campaign is to raise $5,000 through small, individual donations and raise enough money to provide bikes and equipment for five participants in the program. All of the funds raised in this campaign will be donated directly to the camp.
