Apply to be a member of the Student Wellness Ambassador Team (SWAT)!

Starting on Thursday, March 10, 2016 the Wellness Centre is accepting applications for the 2016-17 Student Wellness Ambassador Team (SWAT). If you are interested in campus health promotion and have the time to volunteer 4-5 hours a week from September 2016 to April 2017 we might be the team for you!

We are looking for students with the following skills and abilities:

  • Demonstrated passion or experience in anything related to health and wellness
  • Demonstrated community development initiatives or support (i.e. volunteer work, committees, class projects)
  • Demonstrated ability to make connections with others (i.e. has confidence to connect and engage with other students or employees)
  • Confidence to speak with others about related health issues and/or the ability to refer to someone more appropriate (i.e. if someone mentions a sexual health concern you feel comfortable speaking with them, or you acknowledge that there might be someone more appropriate and refer them to this person)
  • Prior knowledge of health promotion and illness prevention theories would be an asset, but not mandatory
  • Prior event planning, coordinating or related experience would be an asset but is not mandatory
  • The recognition that no one knows everything, so it is OK to voice your own knowledge limitations

Some of the requirements/details of the positions:

  • Successful applicants MUST be available for 3 day MANDATORY Certified Peer Health Educator Training the week before classes start in September 2016. Tentative dates for this training are: Tuesday, August 30, Wednesday, August 31 and Thursday, September 1 , 2016.
  • Successful applicants must also participate in a 2-day Mental Health First Aid Certificate by December 2016.
  • The term for the positions will run from Tuesday, September 6, 2015 – Thursday April 13, 2017.
  • Successful applicants will be required to volunteer between 4-5 hours per week (with time off during exam period in December).
  • Students will be required to volunteer hours in the Wellness Centre each week and provide peer support and help with wellness events and initiatives.

The TRU Wellness Centre promotes the well-being of our growing, changing, diverse TRU community. The TRU Wellness Centre values the health of all employees and students on campus, and aims to provide unique, educational and fun programs that will help provide the skills and tools needed to create a more harmonious and balanced life. We do:

  • Individual wellness plans and health and wellness consultations
  • Presentations to classrooms on wellness issues such as stress management, nutrition, healthy relationships, responsible drinking, etc
  • Campus-wide activities such as stress busters events, sexual health events, nutrition events, weekly wellness classes, etc.

It is expected that successful applicants will:

  • Support the Wellness Centre in the design, development and delivery of health and wellness programs across campus.
  • Be responsible for working out of the Wellness Centre space in order to support students and employees who want to access health and wellness information.
  • Attend and participate in bi-weekly meetings with your supervisor and fellow Peers.
  • Discuss and provide input to the Wellness Centre Coordinator about how your work could be interesting, challenging and meaningful.
  • Communicate to the Wellness Centre Coordinator your needs in relation to performing your work effectively or anything else that is important to you in your work as a SWAT Leader.
  • Participate in on-going training and development opportunities provided through the SWAT Leaders program.
  • Commit to developing an understanding of the Wellness Centre’s services and initiatives.
  • Perform your job to the best of your abilities.
