Mining and minerals diploma opportunity announced

January 27, 2016

Dean of Science Tom Dickinson signs the memorandum of understanding.

Students looking to complete a diploma in mineral exploration and mining technology from the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) will be able to do so at TRU and four other post-secondary institutions thanks to a new pilot project.

The B.C. Centre of Training Excellence in Mining (CTEM) announced an agreement enabling students to complete the diploma program at TRU and further apply their education toward a degree in mining and mineral resources engineering at BCIT.

“This pilot program is an opportunity to provide outstanding training opportunities for the mining and mineral exploration professionals of tomorrow, often starting right in their own communities,” said B.C. Centre of Training Excellence in Mining advisory council chair Dave Lefebure.

CTEM is a province-wide virtual hub connecting the mining and mineral industries, communities and public post-secondary institutions throughout the province to ensure students receive targeted training and in-demand skills for these industries.

“We are pleased to play a role in this new program that creates another opportunity for our students who are interested in pursuing a career in mining,” said Tom Dickinson, Dean of TRU’s Faculty of Science.
